FINANCES: how to manage and make money
Poker
For many years I’ve played poker online, mostly focusing on low-stakes multi-table tournaments (MTTs). Over time I developed a skill set that allows me to hold my own in these games, though I’ve never pushed it very far.
Now I want to put a little challenge in front of myself: starting from a tiny bankroll and seeing how far I can grow it on sites like PokerStars and GGPoker.
My Rules
-
Bankroll growth challenge: every time my bankroll grows, 20% of the profit goes straight to my bank account.
-
Reinvestment: the remaining 80% stays online to climb into higher stakes over time.
-
Commitment: I have to keep playing until I grow the bankroll—even if it sometimes takes a while.
Bankroll management: I only buy into tournaments with an entry fee no higher than bankroll ÷ 50.
Early exception: until I reach a bankroll of €50, I allow myself to play whatever suits me. (Reason: with less than €50, strict bankroll management would limit me only to freerolls or micro-stakes up to $1, which is too restrictive.)
PokerStars Progress
-
Starting bankroll: €0.42
-
Current bankroll: €0.42
First Thoughts
Since I’m starting with only €0.42, I have to carefully consider what I can realistically manage with it. At this point, strict bankroll management (bankroll ÷ 50) isn’t really practical. That’s why I’m allowing myself more flexibility until I reach €50. For now, my options are freerolls and the very lowest buy-in tournaments or sit & go’s, while keeping in mind that every cent counts.
